SANDY, Utah, July 23, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified a woman killed in a shooting in a Sandy trailer park Wednesday evening.
A tweet from Sandy police Thursday afternoon said: “The victim has been identified as Aliani Mejia-Marin, an 18-year-old Sandy resident. The juvenile male suspect has been booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.”
Sandy Police said Wednesday evening that one juvenile male was in custody and there were no suspects outstanding. The suspect has not been identified because of his juvenile status.
Sandy City Police Sgt. Clayton Swensen told Gephardt Daily a call of shots fired came in at 6:10 p.m., and police responded to the Sandy Mobile Home Park, at 223-201 W. Eastgate Drive, which is at about 8840 South.
“There was a confrontation between two groups, and it escalated to shots fired,” Swensen said. “A female was struck, and she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.”
Mejia-Marin later died of her injuries.
Swensen said he could not confirm the nature of the argument that preceded the shooting.
Sandy City Police worked into the night interviewing witnesses.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by a family friend to assist with funeral expenses for the victim.
Gephardt Daily will have more information as the story develops.
