SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 18, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police Department has identified a 19-year-old man killed Saturday night in a crash on Redwood Road.

Salt Lake City police officials said the deceased is Junior Avila.

SLCPD Sgt. Josh Ashdown told Gephardt Daily Saturday the investigation into the two-vehicle crash is still in the early stages.

Police believe an Audi sedan, driven by Avila, was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Redwood Road when it apparently clipped the back of a van and slammed into a tree.

The impact was so severe that Vila’s car was split in two, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ashdown said two people in the van are in good condition and being treated at a local hospital.

“As best as we can tell, the key factor right now seems to be speed,” Ashdown said, but he emphasized that the Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team will determine the exact cause.

Ashdown said police have found very few witnesses to the crash, and they are asking anyone who saw the accident and how it happened to call non-emergency dispatch at 801-799-3000.
