PROVO, Utah, Sept. 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified a 25-year-old Brigham Young University student from South America killed Sunday evening after he collided with a vehicle while riding a longboard in Provo.

The deceased has been identified as Jonathan Godoy Morales, from Chile, Provo Police tweeted Monday afternoon.

Provo Police Department Detective Nick Dupaix told Gephardt Daily the international student was riding a longboard west on Stadium Avenue towards Canyon Road at approximately 8:15 p.m. Sunday. The longboarder collided with a four-door sedan that was traveling southbound on Canyon Road.

Dupaix said Morales was thrown several feet.

Paramedics treated the student at the scene and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he passed away.

The driver of the car said she did not notice the student before the crash occurred.

A Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) is working to establish the cause of the crash.

A series of tweets from Provo Police Department Monday afternoon said: “When the longboarder attempted to travel across Canyon Road, he missed a vehicle traveling north and a vehicle traveling south. However, another vehicle traveling south came in contact with the longboarder. Investigators are currently reconstructing the accident.”

It’s not clear if Morales was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

The tweets from Provo police added: “We thank BYU for their help on our investigation and helping us make contact with Jonathan’s family.”
