Update: Police ID horseback rider fatally injured in Riverton accident

RIVERTON, Utah, Sept. 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Officials have identified a 36-year-old man who died Monday night after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a horse on 13800 South.

Sgt. Melody Gray, of the Unified Police Department, tweeted the deceased is Venancio Avila, of West Valley City

Gray told Gephardt Daily the accident happened at about 7 p.m., as a “smaller SUV” was westbound at 2143 W. 13800 South.

The accident is still under investigation and the cause is not yet known, but Gray said it’s possible the sun was in the driver’s eyes.

The driver remained on scene and was cooperating fully with police.

Gray said the horse had to be put down due to its injuries.
