OGDEN, Utah, Nov. 4, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — A Utah Amber Alert has been cancelled after a 10-month-old Ogden girl was abducted while in her car seat inside a running vehicle Wednesday morning.
The Amber Alert was issued Wednesday at 10:45 a.m., after a gray 2008 Acura TL was left idling in the 200 West block of Patterson Street in Ogden.
The little girl’s name is Amila Spratley-Apke, born on Dec. 25, 2019. Amila was reunited with her mother and was not hurt.
Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to provide more details.
“At approximately 10:45 a.m., a Weber dispatcher received a 911 call from a woman reporting her vehicle, containing her 10-month-old baby girl, had been stolen from the driveway of a residence on Patterson Street west of Wall Avenue,” Watt said.
“She’d gone into the home of an acquaintance, leaving the child in the running car, under the watch of another adult. Unfortunately the other adult also exited the vehicle for a few minutes and went into the home.”
Moments later when they both exited the home, both the car and the child were gone, Watt said.
“The car was immediately broadcast by Weber area dispatch and officers responded and began searching for the vehicle,” Watt added. “The staff of the area Tactical Analysis Center rapidly created visuals on the car and sent the information to officers in the field, as well as sending key data that was the result of current OPD camera technology which identified the direction of travel of the vehicle and allowed officers to begin moving in that direction.”
Surrounding agencies were also notified, Watt said. The Department of Public Safety rapidly generated an Amber Alert, which resulted in several sightings and reports of the vehicle and its general direction.
“At 12:37 p.m., officers received a report that a baby in a car seat had been placed on the porch of a house in Plain City, and the vehicle had sped off,” Watt said. “As of this time there’s no known connection of the house to the suspects.” A witness saw the baby on the porch and called authorities, Watt said.
The sighting allowed officials to move quickly to the area and locate the vehicle on the road in Plain City. Weber deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. The suspects sped off and a pursuit began. The deputies then backed off and the DPS helicopter continued to follow the vehicle. The vehicle ended up off road and the suspects fled on the foot.
The suspects were arrested by Weber County Sheriff’s deputies. They have been identified as Angel Jusso, 34 and Roddy Mike Montes, 20 . Both suspects are being questioned and charges are being reviewed by the Weber County Attorney’s Office. At the minimum they will include child kidnapping and auto theft.
The investigation into the incident is continuing, Watt said. It’s not clear at this early stage whether the suspects knew there was a baby in the car when they took it.
