SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah, July 1, 2016 (Kurt Hanson, Gephardt Daily) — A Utah corrections officer lost his leg in an accident on his motorcycle in Saratoga Springs Thursday morning, according to Daily Herald.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, said the accident happened just before 6 a.m. on Redwood Road near mile marker 33 between a vehicle and a motorcycle driven by Sgt. Daniel Erickson as he headed home from work.

Erickson, who has worked as a corrections officer with the Utah Department of Corrections for eight years, severed his left leg, broke three ribs, suffered a collapsed lung and possibly punctured his intestine during the accident. He was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical condition.

The details of the accident were not immediately available, but Cannon said forensics officers were requested to take blood for testing.

The condition of the driver, or the occupants of the other car, was not available.

Brooke Adams, spokeswoman for the UDOC, told Daily Herald she and the department wish the best for Erickson and his family.

“We are heartbroken about this accident and are offering Daniel and his family our love and support as he recovers,” she said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Ericksons for anyone wishing to donate.
