John Huber, U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah, announced the investigation and its findings at a Friday news conference where officials from other cooperating agencies, including the FBI and the Salt Lake City Police Department, also spoke.

After years of decline or stability, violent crime numbers began to rise in 2015, Huber said. Rates increased 14 percent in 2015, he said, and newly released numbers show that rates rose 18 percent in 2016.

“That’s on top of the 14 percent,” Huber said of the 2016 number. “It’s very, very troubling, and Utah stands out in a bad way with that type of crime rate.”

Investigators began to notice that many people involved with violent crime also were involved with GlenMob, so the investigation became more focused.
