Brittany Scadlock, of West Haven, died just 10 days away form her 20th birthday. The 19-year-old Western Nebraska Community College soccer player died Wednesday from E. coli, while serving an LDS mission in Argentina.

In a statement to Gephardt Daily from Eric Hawkins, LDS church spokesman, the church expressed their condolences to the family. “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Sister Brittany Nicole Scadlock (age 19). Sister Scadlock began serving her mission in the Argentina Resistencia Mission in August 2014, and is from the Kanesville Utah Stake. She passed away Wednesday evening from complications related to an illness. We extend our love and prayers to her family and all who knew her as they mourn her passing.”

According to the family spokesperson, the infection spread very quickly. They first believed that she had appendicitis but after running tests it was determined that she had the highly infectious E. coli in her system. She was never able to fight it off and went into cardiac arrest.

Brittany’s parents, Terry and Nicole Scadlock, were already in Los Angeles trying to get passports when they were told that Brittany had passed away and have since returned to Utah.

After she graduated from Roy High School in 2013, Brittany earned a soccer scholarship and went to play for Western Nebraska and decided to go on a LDS mission after feeling moved during the annual general conference.

Brittany Scadlock’s Facebook was filling up with posts Thursday afternoon in tribute to her.

Brittni Strickland, a friend of Brittany’s from high school said it is a very sad time for all those who knew her. “I remember seeing Brittany throughout the halls at Roy High and watching her play on various sports teams,” she said. “She always had a bright and contagious smile on her face with a warm hello. Brittany will be missed by many and my thoughts and prayers go out to the Scadlock family.”

They have set up a gofundme account for anyone wishing to help the Scadlocks with Brittany’s funeral expenses.
