KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — One member of the Utah National Guard was killed and 11 others were injured Wednesday in combat operations in Afghanistan.

No names have been released, pending notification of families. The wounded have been evacuated for medical treatment, according to the statement from the National Guard.

The Guard members were on a mission “… aimed at further reducing Islamic State of Iraq and Syrian-Khorasan presence in Afghanistan,” the statement said. Afghan Forces also were on the mission.

“My heart aches for the loss and sacrifice of our members and their families,” said Maj. Gen. Jefferson Burton, adjutant general of the Utah National Guard, in the statement.

“I know that what we do is dangerous and important work for our country’s defense, but this realization does little to console me during times of loss such as this.”

Gephardt Daily will have more on this story as information becomes available.
