WASHINGTON, D.C., June 29, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- Utah Sen. Mike Lee announced he is withdrawing his proposal to approve the sale of millions of acres of public lands, which had been an amendment to the proposed "Big Beautiful Bill."

The proposal, if approved, would have cleared the way for the sale of more than 18 million acres of eligible land in Utah alone.

Lee announced Saturday on social media he was withdrawing his proposal, which had sparked lots of controversy.

"I'm grateful to everyone who took the time to offer thoughtful feedback," Lee wrote, in part. "Your voices helped strengthen this bill, and they will continue to shape the path forward."

Lee wrote that he continues to believe "the federal government owns far too much land--land it is mismanaging, and, in many cases, ruining for the next generation."

Lee wrote that because of strict constraints of the budget reconciliation process, "I was unable to secure clear, enforceable safeguards to guarantee that these lands would be sold only to American families, not to China, not to BlackRock, and not to any foreign interests."
