Utah Senator Orrin Hatch announces retirement

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 2, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Senator Orrin Hatch announced Tuesday he plans to retire and will not seek a seventh term in office.

Hatch, who has held the office since 1977, announced his decision in a tweeted video.

“Every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves, and for me, that time is soon approaching,” Hatch said, in part.

“That’s why, after much prayer and discussion with family and friends, I’ve decided to retire at the end of this term. Although I will miss serving you in the Senate, I look forward to spending time with my family, especially my sweet wife, Elaine, whose unwavering love and support made all this possible.

“I’m deeply grateful for the privilege you’ve given me to serve as your senator these last four decades. I may be leaving the Senate, but the next chapter in my public service is just beginning. I want to thank you all for your support through these many years. May God bless you all.”
