SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Visitors at Utah’s Hogle Zoo this weekend may have an opportunity to see the newest addition to the zoo’s western lowland gorilla troop.
Mother Pele delivered a health baby male gorilla about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, zoo officials announced on social media.
“Both mom and baby are doing well! Pele is already an amazing, attentive mom, and Husani (dad) continues to do his job keeping the troop in order,” the post says. “The troop is curious about the newborn but keeping a respectful distance for the new parents.”
Georgia, a 3-year-old western lowland gorilla, appears to be the most excited about the new addition to the troop, the post says.
“This birth marks an important step in the conservation of western lowland gorillas. We’re so excited to contribute to this critically endangered species!”
Zoo officials will be closely monitoring Pele, the baby and the troop, the post says.
“You may be able to see him as soon as [Friday] afternoon and this weekend,” the post says. “Congratulations, Pele!”
