WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, March 24, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two men are in area hospitals early Saturday morning following an altercation in which one man was stabbed and the other was shot.

Lt. Mike Fossmo, West Valley City Police Department, said an adult male went to a Holiday gas station at 3500 South and 4400 West to make some purchases shortly before 11 p.m. Friday.

Some sort of argument ensued between him and another man, and the dispute continued outside.

“He was in an altercation with another adult male,” Fossmo said. “During that brief altercation, the man who initially went in suffered a stab wound.”

It reportedly was a serious stab wound in the neck.

That’s when the man who was stabbed produced a gun, fired multiple shots, and the man who reportedly stabbed the victim was struck by a bullet, Fossmo said.

The suspect fled into the neighborhood, so officers set up a containment area, brought in the K-9s, and located the suspect.

“So we have two patients that are currently in area hospitals, who have suffered significant wounds,” Fossmo said.

Because of the severity of the victim’s stab wound, officers transported him to the hospital in a police car.

Only the victim and the suspect were involved, Fossmo said, and no one else was injured.

The incident occurred outside of the Holiday store and was captured on surveillance video.

Fossmo said there were also several witnesses to what he called the “brazen” incident.

Officers were expecting to be on scene for quite awhile, and they encourage anyone who has any information that could help in the investigation to call WVCPD at 801-840-4000.
