Video: Lt. Gov. Cox tours Box Elder County; Utah National Guard helps after severe flooding

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 22, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah National Guard has been called out to help respond to severe flooding in Box Elder County.

On Wednesday, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert announced the Guard would be helping with efforts to limit damage from the flooding by filling and placing sandbags, and providing other services.Members responded the same day.

Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox and several other state and county officials toured the damage on Wednesday, and Cox posted video on Facebook showing the view during his helicopter flight in, over water-covered roadways and rain-swollen fields. To see the video, click on the player above.

The flooding is being caused by early warming after multiple snow storms this winter, officials say. The soil is saturated, and additional rain, snow and runoff have nowhere to go.

The American Red Cross and other emergency assistance organizations will be set up from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Brigham City to help with the needs of flood victims seeking assistance. They will be at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 235 E. 850 South.

“Trained caseworkers will be available at the MARC to help people create personal recovery plans, navigate paperwork, and locate assistance for their specific disaster-caused needs,” said a post on the Box Elder Emergency Management Facebook page.

“Representatives from multiple government, nonprofit, and religiously-affiliated disaster relief organizations will also be on hand at the MARC to assist disaster survivors. Questions may be sent to the Red Cross at 801-627-0000 or emailing [email protected]
