UTAH – August 12, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) –  A bicyclist who was in serious condition after losing control while negotiating a sharp curve during the Tour of Utah has been released from hospital.

According to the team’s doctor, Dr. Jarrad van Zuydam, the rider, Matt Brammeier, a professional cyclist riding for team Qhubeka, sustained severe injuries to his pelvis, ribs and lungs, after slamming into a service vehicle August 8.

In a statement on the team’s official page, van Zuydam said “Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital. His musculoskeletal injuries are significant however. He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones. Matt is unlikely to require surgery but will need some time to recover from his injuries.”

However, van Zuydam posted on Monday that Brammeier has been released from hospital and will fly home soon. He also thanked the medical staff at the University Hospital.

The entire incident was recorded by an observer who also caught subsequent riders crashing into a motorcycle who had stopped in the lane of travel to help assist the cyclist.
