VINEYARD, Utah, April 24, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Vineyard man was found guilty Monday of two counts of rape of a child, two counts of sodomy upon a child and one count of attempted sodomy upon a child, all first-degree felonies.

Oscar Alonso Nunez, 35, who was living in Vineyard at the time of the crimes, repeatedly sodomized and raped an 8-year-old girl over the course of eight months, Utah County Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

The young victim told her mother what had happened and was examined and treated at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem and Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, the news release said. The child was also forensically interviewed at the Children’s Justice Center.

Following four days of trial and more than 15 hours of deliberation in the Fourth District Court of Utah, the jury found Nunez guilty of sodomy and rape of a child, each of which carries a minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years to life in the Utah State Prison.

Immediately following the verdict, the Honorable Judge Thomas Low ordered that Nunez be taken into custody. Nunez was booked into the Utah County Jail. Sentencing is scheduled for June 6.
