Shoplifter Assaults Wal-Mart Security Guard

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Dec. 2, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A  security guard was assaulted as he attempted to stop a man from stealing at a Salt Lake City Wal-Mart Tuesday night.

According to Salt Lake City Detective Richard Chipping, the suspect, identified as Fred Rodriguez, 36, entered the Wal-Mart located at 350 W. Hope Avenue around 10 p.m. and attempted to leave with a space heater.

As Rodriguez left, he was confronted by the security guard and a fight ensued. During the altercation, the officer received injuries to his head and hands.

The suspect tried to run from the scene, but two off-duty officers who were in the area located the suspect in the parking structure and took him into custody.

Rodriguez was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on aggravated assault and robbery charges.

The security guard was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
