OGDEN, Utah, June 9, 2025 (Gephardt Daily)-- The Weber County Sheriff's Office is mourning the untimely death of police dog Nova.

Under the headline "With Heavy Hearts – In Memory of K9 Nova," the sheriff's office Sunday shared the news of Nova's unexpected loss.

"It is with deep sorrow that the Weber County Sheriff’s Office announces the untimely passing of Police Service Dog 'Nova,'" reads the press release. "Nova passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, due to an unexpected medical condition. She was just shy of 2 years old."

Nova joined the sheriff’s office in November 2024 and immediately began training in narcotics detection alongside her handler, Deputy Nielsen, the WCSO news release said.

At the time of her passing, she was actively attending a narcotics detection certification course and showed tremendous promise.

"Nova was more than just a partner in service -- she was a beloved member of Deputy Nielsen’s family, where she was deeply cherished and undoubtedly spoiled with love and care.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Deputy Nielsen, his family, and all of Nova’s extended work family at WCSO. Thank you for your service, Nova. You will forever remain part of our family and will never be forgotten."
