18 injured in Wellsville Canyon multi-car crash during heavy snow

LOGAN, Utah, March 1, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A multi-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon during white out conditions in Wellsville Canyon injured 18 people, officials said.

The incident occurred on southbound State Route 89 at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the Dry Lake area at milepost 11, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

Traffic began to slow, and a car was struck from behind by a semi pulling an empty side dump trailer, the news release said. This caused a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles being pushed into each other or struck by the semi. Two of the vehicles were 15-passenger vans that were full or nearly full.

None of the injuries were life threatening. Five of the injured people were transported to Cache Valley Hospital in North Logan, and three of the injured were taken to Logan Regional Hospital, all by ambulance. Ten of the inured were taken to Brigham City hospitals or transported by private vehicles.

Southbound SR-89 was closed until 5:30 p.m.
