WEST JORDAN, Utah, July 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have released the name of a man who died Friday night after being shot by officers he repeatedly opened fire on during the course of a domestic violence call.

West Jordan Police Detective Fields told Gephardt Daily that the man was 45-year-old Nicholas Kemp.

WJPD officers responded to a domestic violence call near 8700 South and 1300 West, Fields told Gephardt Daily.

“As the officers approached the residence, the suspect began shooting at officers,” she said. “He then got into a vehicle and started fleeing the area, so officers pursued him.

“The suspect continued firing at officers during the vehicle pursuit until it terminated in the area of 9600 South and 1300 West.”

Although an exact timeline is not available, the incident was over by 9 p.m. when police alerted reporters they could come to an area near the scene for a news conference.

After being shot, Kemp was rushed to a hospital, where he died later that night, Fields said.

The incident will be investigated by an outside agency as an officer-involved critical incident.
