WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 17, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — West Valley City firefighters were left scratching their heads Sunday morning after being called to an apartment fire that didn’t really exist.

There was a fire, all right.

And there was an apartment complex.

Yet what ended up burning was a single-family home nestled inside the complex about a block away from the original address firefighters were called to.

West Valley Fire Battalion Chief Jed Peters told Gephardt Daily it was about 7:15 a.m. when dispatch received the call for help.

By the time fire crews figured out exactly where they were going, the old home was pretty much destroyed.

It took 30 firefighters to knock down the blaze.

Neighbors said the home had been vacant for the last few months and that vagrants had been staying in the house at night in order to stay warm.

Damage was estimated at $100,000.

The cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
