WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, May 16, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A West Valley City Police officer was transported to the hospital after his patrol car was struck by another driver on Thursday.

Lt. M.T. Johnson, WVCPD, said the officer was eastbound on 4100 South at 4000 West when he proceeded through the intersection on a green light and was struck by a car that ran a red light.

“A person traveling north ran the red light and struck him on the passenger side,” Johnson said. “After his vehicle was struck, it caused it to spin around. The tail end of it (the patrol car) struck a car that was waiting here in the westbound lane to turn south.

“The officer was complaining of head and back pain, so he was transported to the hospital by one of our other officers.”

The Unified Police Department was called in to investigate the accident since it involved a WVCPD officer, Johnson said. UPD officials will determine any charges to be filed against the driver who initiated the accident, Johnson said.

Update

A WVCPD tweet issued later updated the officer’s condition:

“The officer has been examined and is OK. No other injuries.”
