West Valley City police search for suspect who stole police cruiser, fled on foot

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are looking for a suspect the say stole a police cruiser in West Valley City early Sunday morning then fled on foot.

Lt. Blair Barfus with the West Valley City Police Department said that at approximately 5:45 a.m., two officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic incident in progress in the area of 4500 S. 4500 West.

Officers were contacted by Josh Bell, 28, outside the residence, police said. Bell urged officers to hurry inside the residence claiming that one family member was going to kill another.  As officers began entering the residence, they observed Bell get into one of the officer’s vehicle and drive away westbound on Palmer Drive towards 4800 West.
“The officers ran into the residence upon that discussion with the individual outside and as they made entry, they observed the individual jump into one of their police cars and drive away from the scene,” Barfus said.
The officer had left his vehicle running and failed to lock the vehicle.
A containment was established, and the officer’s vehicle was quickly located. The vehicle was abandoned at Woodledge Park near the canal road. All property inside the vehicle was accounted for by the officer.
A search of the area was conducted, but Bell was not located.
Bell is described as average height, wearing black clothing with white socks and no shoes.
The suspect is likely to be charged with vehicle theft and other charges that have yet to be determined.
