WEST WENDOVER, Nevada, July 4, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) -- The city of West Wendover has canceled its July 4th fireworks show after a firefighter and others were injured in a "detonation" Friday morning.

According to a series of online statements posted on the West Wendover City Facebook page, the accidental detonation happened on 3 Mile Mountain. "At this point, there’s been one injury that is not life-threatening," the initial post said.

An online statement by West Wendover Mayor Jasie Holm also addressed the incident. "For those that heard the fireworks this morning. Prayers to the injured firefighter and for the safety of all our firefighters and public workers."

Holm also reported that two off-road utility vehicles were burned as a result of the detonation, which happened about 9 a.m.

An updated Facebook post by West Wendover City provided a limited update on the extent of injuries, and delivered the news that the city's fireworks display had been called off.

"All city crews involved with the accidental set off of fireworks are safely off of the 3 Mile Mountain," the post said. "There were a few individuals who received injuries [-] none life-threatening. All have been assessed and received medical treatment.

"Given the incident there will be no fireworks display tonight for the Fourth of July," the city statement said.

Gephardt Daily will update this article as more information becomes available.
