PAYSON, Utah, May 19, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision involving a car and a horse on State Route 198 near 1993 South late Saturday night.
A 65-year-old female passenger died in the crash, and the male driver was transported to the hospital for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries, UHP Trooper Dave Hull told Gephardt Daily.
The crash occurred at about 10 p.m. in the dark, rural area, when “a sedan made impact with a large horse,” Hull said. It wasn’t known if the animal was wild or had escaped from a paddock or nearby meadow.
The driver and deceased passenger are from the Juab County area, Hull said. Their identities have not been released pending notification of family.
Hull said deer on or crossing the roads are frequently a problem for drivers, but this is the first incident involving a horse that he is aware of. It was initially unclear if the horse survived accident.
The cause of the crash is under investigation and it isn’t known if there were any contributing factors, but Hull wants everyone to remember to adjust their driving for current weather conditions.
“With all the storms we’ve been having lately, it’s important for people to drive appropriately for the wet roadway,” he said.
Prayers for all those involved.
The officer is incorrect about auto horse accidents in the area. There have been 2 more within the last couple years very close to that spot.
Was the horse OK?
Prayers go out to the family of the humans and the equine
