SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 5, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman who died after being hit by a freight train in Salt Lake City has been identified, police said Monday.

Genevieve Blackwater, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.

The accident happened at approximately 4:15 p.m. Sunday, when a Union Pacific train traveling southbound hit Blackwater at 500 W. North Temple St., the news release said.

Union Pacific contacted police and stated that one of their trains had struck a pedestrian crossing the tracks near the North Temple Street overpass.

It was determined the incident occurred in an area off-limits to pedestrians. It appears the victim was attempting to get clear of the tracks as the train was approaching, but did not make it all the way across before the train struck and killed her.
