VERNAL, Utah, March 9, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 35-year-old woman was found deceased when crews responded to an apartment fire in Vernal on Friday night.

Uintah Fire District Director Jeremy Raymond said there were reports of smoke and an ammonia smell coming from an apartment at 355 E. 100 North at about 10 p.m.

When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the window of a neighboring apartment, not the one initially reported, and found heavy smoke upstairs when they entered the two-story building.

Firefighters were told by neighbors that someone may be in the apartment, and when crews searched the second floor, they found the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Raymond said the name of the woman is not being released pending notification of family members.

He said no one else was in the apartment, and there were no other injures in the fire.

Raymond said damage was estimated at $40,000, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
