BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, March 3, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Law enforcement officers in Box Elder County are investigating a homicide that occurred Sunday morning in Bothwell, west of Tremonton.

At about 6:50 a.m., deputies were called to a residence on an unknown problem, according to a news release from Box Elder County Chief Deputy Dale Ward. Utah Highway Patrol and Tremonton Police also responded.

Tremonton officers were the first to arrive, and they found a deceased woman, identified as 53-year-old Maria De Jesus Cervantes.

Cervantes had been stabbed multiple times, the news release states.

A 39-year-old man, who has been identified as Jose Gutierrez-Torres, also was at the scene, and he had a knife wound in his neck.

“Further investigation revealed that Gutierrez-Torres had stabbed Cervantes and then turned the knife on himself,” the news release says.

Gutierrez-Torres was transported to the hospital and stabilized. He was then transferred to another hospital for surgery and was in intensive care Sunday night.

Gutierrez-Torres is in custody and will be transported to the Box Elder County Jail when he is released from the hospital.
