Woman in critical condition after being hit by car in West Valley City

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Nov. 10, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman was rushed to the hospital Saturday night after she was struck by a vehicle as she crossed 2700 West at 4700 South.

Lt. Shane Matheson, with the West Valley City Police Department, said the accident happened just before 11 p.m., as the woman, who is in her early 40s, was crossing from west to east in the crosswalk, but against the light.

“Traffic southbound had the green light,” Matheson said at the scene. “A vehicle traveling in the No. 2 southbound lane entered the intersection on the green light and struck the female.”

The woman was knocked to the ground and sustained serious injuries.

“She was transported, not awake or alert, not talking. She was pretty critical, but breathing on her own, which is a good sign,” Matheson told Gephardt Daily.

He said she was rushed to the hospital, where she was currently undergoing surgery. Police were awaiting an update on her condition from an officer who was at the hospital.

The female driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperating fully with the police.

Witnesses said the woman pedestrian crossed from west going east on the red light, and investigators were diagramming the accident scene “to get a better picture of what occurred,” Matheson said.

Anyone who witnessed the accident and has not given a statement to the police, is asked to call WVCPD at 801-840-4000.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information is made available.
