RIVERDALE, Utah, May 26, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail for child abuse Thursday after leaving her children locked in the trunk of a car while she went shopping.

According to a news release from Riverdale Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Riverdale Walmart on a report of child neglect.

A witness there told officers a woman had locked the childrenĀ in the trunk of a passenger car. The children, ages 2 and 5, started making noise and “moving frantically, causing the vehicle to shake,” the release states. “Several good Samaritans observed this and came to the aid of the children.”

One of the witnesses on scene instructed the 5-year-old girl to pull the emergency latch inside the trunk, and the children were freed from the vehicle.

The Department of Child and Family Services was called, and the children were turned over to a responsible party.

When the children’s mother, Tori Castillo, 39, returned to the vehicle, she was interviewed by police and booked into jail for child abuse.
