DRAPER, Utah, Sept. 13, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in Draper say a 26-year-old woman warded off an attempted sexual assault Thursday night while jogging on the Porter Rockwell Trail.

Police said the woman was in the area of 1300 E. Constitution Ave. (12500 South) when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown male suspect.

The man attempted to remove the victim’s clothing, according to police, but she used pepper spray to defend herself. The suspect, wearing dark clothing, ran from the scene and ultimately eluded police.

Their investigation is ongoing.

The Draper Police Department characterized the assault as an “isolated and rare event,” but cautioned those who use the local outdoor trails to be aware of their surroundings.

“We want to remind trail users to take the necessary safety precautions,” a police statement said.

“Please be aware of your surroundings, exercise with others, carry a whistle, pepper spay or other similar device to draw attention or stop an attack, and immediately report any suspicious people or activity.”

To report an incident or suspicious activity in the area, call 911 or 801-840-4000.
