SPRINGDALE, Utah, June 6, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — The body of a 26-year-old woman was recovered Sunday evening in Zion National Park.

According to a statement by the National Park Service search and rescue efforts began Saturday afternoon, following a report from park visitors who said “that they found a lone female canyoneer that had fallen 50 to 80 feet in Mystery Canyon.”

The woman sustained injuries consistent with a high-elevation fall, the release says.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched, but was not able to extricate the woman because of the steep, narrow canyon walls.

“Park Medics were able to reach the patient shortly before she succumbed to her injuries,” the statement says.

The incident is under investigation by the National Park Service, with Washington County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency, the news release says.
