OGDEN, Utah, May 1, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A worker was killed in an industrial accident early Tuesday morning in Ogden.
Police responded to American Nutrition, 2890 Reeves Ave., at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday. Raul Ortiz, 33, was found to be dead at the scene.
Ortiz had been working on the packing line in the dry pet food plant, and was fatally injured when he tried to restart a machine that stacks pet food bags on a pallet.
Ortiz, a Roy resident, had worked at the plant for about six years.
Bill Behnken, CEO of American Nutrition, released a statement:
“At approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, one of our packaging line associates, Raul Ortiz, 33, was fatally injured while attempting to restart an automatic bag palletizer at our Ogden, Utah manufacturing plant. We are investigating the accident, but are at the early stages of that process.
“The entire American Nutrition family is deeply saddened at the loss of our dear associate and we extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. American Nutrition is offering support to the family in the immediate aftermath of this tragic event.”
The Utah Occupational Safety and Health Division is investigating the accident, an official confirmed. Ogden Police also are conducting an investigation.
The plant, which employs about 300 people, will be closed for the rest of the day.
