Update: Police identify West Valley City woman who died in intentionally-set blaze

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, June 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 73-year-old woman intentionally set numerous fires in her own home in West Valley City early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Co Hoai Tran died in the fire at 1601 Crystal Ave., said Roxeanne Vainuku, spokeswoman for the West Valley City Police Department, in a news release.

West Valley City Fire responded to reports of the house fire at approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday, Vainuku said. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire billowing from the windows of the home.

Crews were alerted that an elderly woman lived in the home alone and that she may still be inside. Fire crews extinguished the fire and entered the home, then discovered Tran’s body.

An investigation has revealed evidence that indicates Tran’s death was the result of suicide and that multiple fires, in various rooms of the home, were intentionally set.

Damage to the home is estimated at $80,000.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
