WEST VALLEY CITY, July 5, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The West Valley City Police Department is warning the public of a rash of thefts from open garages over the July 4 holiday.

The news release on Facebook Wednesday afternoon said police have seen a recent rise in thieves stealing from open garages.

“These burglaries are crimes of opportunity and thieves are taking pretty much anything they can find,” the news release said.

The police department posted a map that shows the main area where several garages left open overnight Tuesday night were burglarized. The area is between 7200 West and west of 6680 West and from 3100 South to 3500 South.

“Don’t make yourself an easy target,” the news release continues. “Keep garage doors closed, even if you’re just in the backyard and certainly, keep them closed overnight.”

Anyone who sees anything suspicious in their neighborhood, is asked to call the WVCPD at 801-840-4000.
