RIVERTON, Utah, Jan. 1, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Zyani Tala Hyatt made her New Year’s baby debut in Riverton at 12:03 a.m. Wednesday.

She was the first Intermountain Hospital Utah baby of the year. Her parents are Murray residents Marygene and Bronson Hyatt, an Intermountain Health statement says.

“My due date was Jan. 23, and I was scheduled for a Cesarean delivery on Jan. 16, but I went into early labor last night,” Marygene said in the news release.

“Last night we went to a movie, did some early fireworks and left for the hospital about 9:30 p.m.,” Bronson said.

As Marygene was prepped for the surgery, the couple wasn’t sure if the baby would be born in 2024 or 2025. But she ended up being born just after midnight. Mom and baby are both doing well, the IH statement says.

Marygene is originally from a Philippines island called Samar. She became a U.S. citizen in November 2023.

“When I lived in the Philippines, I had a phobia of hospitals because I had a university classmate who died in childbirth,” she said in the release. “Everyone at Riverton Hospital is so kind and smiling and celebrating with you, and that makes me feel safe, and like I have family here.”

Bronson Hyatt also praised the staff.

“The hospital staff have been super helpful and friendly, and our nurse made us feel comfortable, safe and informed,” he said. “They were so gentle with Zyani and her big brother, Bruxs. They even have GPS tracking on babies while they’re in the hospital.”

Bruxs was also born at Intermountain Riverton Hospital. He wasn’t initially sold on having a baby sister, his mother said.

“His first reaction was, ‘No, I want a baby brother.’ He thought she would be too small to play with him,” Marygene said. “But after a while, he started hugging my belly and reading stories to the baby. He would even tell strangers at the grocery store that he’s going to have a baby sister.”

The couple named their daughter Zyani because it’s similar to a word that means gift from God and it’s similar to Marygene’s mother’s maiden name. And the baby’s middle name, Tala, is that of the mythological goddess of the stars in Marygene’s native Tagalog culture.

Riverton Hospital is a 97-bed community hospital with a Level II neonatal ICU. In 2024, 2,400 babies were born at Intermountain Riverton Hospital, a slight increase from 2023 and 2022.

More than 26,000 babies were born at Intermountain Hospitals in Utah in 2024.
