Taylor Andrews Hair Show Offers Big Hair, Great Opportunity and a Chance to Give Back
RIVERTON, UTAH – May 8, 2015 (Gephart Daily) – It was the 12th annual New Dimensions Hair Show for Taylor Andrews Academy of Hair Design last night at Riverton High and through all the big hair, fabulous fashion and magnificent choreography they also managed to come together and give back to those in need.
The students have waited nearly three months for this event and the excitement was felt by everyone. Larry Curtis, president of Taylor Andrews Academy told the audience there is a tremendous amount of hard work involved but every year, when the show is over, they fully understand why they love what they do and why this event is so important.
The idea for the hair show originally came when Curtis attended a big show in Chicago (they also do one in London) called the Alternative Hair Show. “It is truly all the best hair stylists in the world coming together and each do their own segment. That’s when I thought about how proud I am of my students and I think they do good work so I was sure they could do this,” said Curtis. He brought the concept back with him to his business partner at the time and others, along with a video from that particular show in Chicago. “We agreed it was a good idea and that we wanted to do it so we did and it ended up being a great success.”
When it came to deciding to donate the profits to charity, Curtis said that the idea came from knowing he had some of the most giving students. “They are always coming up with ways to help others and that’s when the idea came to donate our profits started to evolve,” said Curtis. “For the first 11 years we donated the proceeds to the YWCA to help battered women and this year we felt it was time for something different.”
Having been moved by a video he saw at an event about other countries and the lack of clean water, he decided to contribute their profits this year to an organization called the Thirst Project. Eden Sassoon, Vidal Sassoon’s daughter and ambassador for the Thirst Project told him if they decided to donate to the cause, she would come out to the event. “She came out to our school in October and our students just seem to love her to death, they think she is awesome and this is a great cause, so that is what we decided to do.”
Students involved in the show last night came from both Orem and West Jordan. Some are brand new to the industry and others are a bit more seasoned. The show offers an opportunity for students to see the higher end of hair design and incorporate it with creativeness and big fashion.
“I always ask freshmen students how many of them have been told there is no money in hair and nearly all of them raise their hands. I tell them that if someone tells you something is impossible, that just means it is impossible for them, it doesn’t mean it is impossible for you. I let them know what we are going to do is show them all the possibilities that are out there and what they do with it is up to them. I am going to show you every opportunity available and how to get there because there is tremendous success possible in the salon industry if you follow through, some will and some will not,” said Curtis.
“This is why we do this, our students always want to make others feel great about themselves and giving back gives them the extra drive to do their best and make every show a success,” said Curtis. At the end of the show, Curtis was able present a check to Eden Sassoon and the Thirst Project from Taylor Andrews Academy and students for $3,000.
