Two respected heavyweights went toe-to-toe in Salt Lake City Friday night, all part of an ongoing effort to battle blindness on a global scale.
Mitt “The Stormin’ Mormon” Romney and Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield headlined the much-ballyhooed event, raising more than a million dollars for the medical non-profit group CharityVision.
Hundreds of Utah’s top shakers-and-movers took part in the charity event which was held at The Rail in Salt Lake City.
Former Utah governor Michael Leavitt appeared as Romney’s corner man, while Utah boxing legend Larry Fulmer refereed the match.
Ringside observers say the contest itself was closer to a friendly slap-fight that an actual boxing match, a move which boxing experts say likely kept the 68-year old Romney from requiring an ambulance as he duked it out with the 54 year-old Holyfield, an actual five-time heavyweight champ.
The fight took a dramatic turn in the second round, when Romney appeared to land a quick overhand right putting Holyfield face down on the canvas. A seemingly “perturbed” Holyfield sprang to his feet, only to be forced to take a standing eight count by hometown referee Fulmer.
Moments later, the fight came to an abrupt end with Romney’s corner throwing in the towel in a tongue-in-cheek attempt to their fighter from being beaten silly by the revenge-seeking Mr. Holyfield.
Holyfield was declared the official winner of the fight, but charity organizers were quick to point out the real winners are those who’ll now have their eyesight treated by doctors across the globe.
According to CharityVision, the proceeds from Friday’s showdown between Romney and Holyfield will allow the group’s physicians to perform 40 thousand sight-saving surgeries in the months ahead.
