AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec. 30 (UPI) — More than 100,000 people across New England, many in Maine, woke up without power Friday after a winter storm pummeled the region with high wind and heavy snow.
The Northeast experienced strong wind and snowfall at rates up to 4 to 6 inches per hour at times, making for blizzard-like conditions overnight Thursday and Friday morning, Weather.com reported. Some areas east of Portland reported receiving more than 2 feet of snow.
The storm is being blamed for one traffic-related fatality, when a man in Vermont had his car slide off the roadway and into a tree. Police have not released the name of the 69-year-old victim.
Heavy snow also touched parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The strong wind brought down trees and power lines across the area. Power outages hit southeastern Maine Friday, with Central Maine Power listing more than 90,000 customer outages; Emera power added another 25,000.
The storm was forecast to pass through the region by Friday morning, bringing behind it cold, dry air for the weekend.
Accuweather.com reported the New Year’s Eve forecast for Times Square revelers is fairly typical: Cold but without much precipitation, though there is the chance for some wet snow or rain overnight Saturday that could threaten the midnight hour.
