300 Injured in South African Train Collision
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, July 17 (UPI) — Two trains collided Friday in South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg, injuring about 300 people, emergency officials said.
The trains collided around 6:30 p.m. local time near the Booysens station, paramedics told BBC.
A spokesman for ER24, a private paramedic service, said there were some serious injuries, but no deaths reported.
“We’re seeing things like soft tissue injuries – and more serious issues like spinal injuries and fractures and breaks,” he said.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told News24, a local news station, one of the trains derailed. The cause of the crash was being investigated.
Some of those injured were transported to local hospitals, while others were being treated on the scene by paramedics.
