5-alarm fire engulfs Manhattan apartment building

Nov. 17 (UPI) — A massive fire has engulfed a six-story apartment building in Manhattan on Friday, filling much of the Hamilton Heights neighborhood with heavy, black smoke.

The New York Fire Department said more than 200 firefighters responded to the scene after the five-alarm fire broke out around 3:15 p.m.

There are stores located on the first floor of the building and 34 residences on the five upper floors. The building’s roof appears to have collapsed and sections of the facade fell to the street.

Firefighters are having difficulty getting the flames under control due to strong winds in the area.

The blaze caused non-life-threatening injuries to four firefighters and one pedestrian.
