Feb. 12 (UPI) — Accused Istanbul nightclub shooter Abdulgadir Masharipov was formally arrested Saturday on charges that included being a member of an armed terrorist organization and multiple counts of first-degree murder.
Masharipov, accused of killing 39 people in a New Year’s Eve shooting in the Reina nightclub attack, was remanded to custody. He had been arrested on Jan. 16 and brought to an Istanbul courthouse on Saturday.
Turkish police previously said up to 17 people were involved in the attack, which also left some 70 people injured. The Islamic State, also known as ISIL, ISIS and Daesh, claimed responsibility for the attack, calling the gunman a “heroic soldier of the caliphate.”
