Alleged Gunman Dead After Opening Fire at Tennessee Movie Theater

ANTIOCH, Tenn., Aug. 5 (UPI) — Police responding to reports of a shots fired at an Antioch, Tenn., movie theater shot and killed a suspect Wednesday, law enforcement officials said.

Police said the suspect, a man, was armed with a hatchet and firearm when he entered the Carmike Hickory 8 Theater around 1 p.m. local time. He also allegedly brought in two backpacks.

It’s not clear if anyone was injured, though Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police told reporters one person in the theater may have been injured by the hatchet.

Aaron said one officer entered the theater, which was screening Mad Max: Fury Road, and was allegedly fired upon by the suspect. A SWAT team then came into the theater, where there was an exchange of fire.

Around 2 p.m. police said the suspect was dead.

The incident comes two weeks after a man opened fire at a movie theater in Lafayette, La., killing two people and himself.
