June 4 (UPI) — Multiple people died Monday in a suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, authorities said.
The attackers approached on foot at a gathering of Muslim scholars near Kabul’s Polytechnic University and left at least seven people dead, Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish told Al Jazeera.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health spokesman Waheed Majrooh said at least 12 injured people were transferred to emergency units after the bombing.
The religious scholars from across the country had gathered to deliver a fatwa — a religious edict issued by an expert in Islamic law — denouncing the ongoing war in Afghanistan.
During the gathering the clerics also declared the killing of Muslims through suicide bombings and other means “illegitimate” and called on the Taliban to accept the Afghan government’s peace offer.
“The suicide attack happened outside the tent when religious scholars were leaving the gathering,” Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
