Nov. 5 (UPI) — Multiple soldiers died during a suicide attack on a security building in Yemen on Sunday morning, security officials said.
An explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the main security headquarters in the city of Aden, killing at least five soldiers and injuring 12 more.
“Fierce clashes between security forces and suspected terrorists escalated after the explosion,” an Aden security official said.
Gunmen stormed the security building and placed snipers on the roof after the explosion at the gate.
Security officials said security chief Shallal al-Shayae was not inside the building at the time of the attack.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in a statement following the attack.
The attack comes after Saudi Arabia intercepted a missile on Saturday, which Yemen’s air force said was intended for the airport in the capitol of Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates support Yemen’s U.N.-backed central government in a civil conflict against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group, which caused President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country temporarily in 2015.
