MOSCOW, Sept. 15 (UPI) — A cyberattack unsuccessfully struck the Kremlin’s official website over the weekend at the same time Russia’s election commission website was attacked.

“On Sunday, a very powerful hacking attack was made on the Russian president’s website. The defense system worked, even though it was not easy,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He did not mention who is suspected of the attempted hack on President Vladimir Putin’s website, but linked it to a simultaneous attack that targeted the Russian Electoral Commission on the day voters went to polls to elect local authorities.

Commission chairman Vladimir Churov said Monday an unidentified company, based in the United States, was responsible for attempting to overrun the election commission website, telling reporters, “Yesterday someone attempted to hack our website and alter the data there, making 50,000 requests per minute. They failed and we have already established the culprit. It’s a company based in San Francisco.”

Peskov said the Kremlin’s website was attacked within a five-hour time period early Sunday, adding he was “sure that [Russian cybersecurity specialists] know who is behind this attack.”
