CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, June 5 (UPI) — The wife of a Bangladeshi police official investigating murders committed by Islamic radicals was killed Sunday in what officials believe was a retaliatory slaying, police said.

Mahmuda Aktar, 33, was killed in front of her 6-year-old son, police spokesman Iqbal Bahar said. She was married to Babul Aktar, who is superintendent of police in Dhaka and was investigating the banned Islamist Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh group.

Three men stabbed her and shot her in the head, police spokesman Iqbal Bahar. Her body was dumped in the street.

“She came out of her apartment to put her son on the school bus [when] suddenly three people on a bike came close to her,” Bahar said. “As Babul Aktar was involved in working against the militants we will investigate whether the militants carried out this operation.”

Mahmuda Aktar had left her 4-year-old daughter in her apartment with housekeepers.

Her husband was transferred to the headquarters in Dhaka in April, but his family remained in Chittagong.

Babul Aktar had led raids on militant hideouts and investigated terrorism-related cases.

Mahmuda Aktar was concerned over security, a neighbor told bdnews24.com.

“She has mentioned it quite a few times recently. A few days ago she said ‘Everyone knows this address. We need to move from this place,’ ” said Sharmin Aktar, who is not related to the victim’s family.

Mahmuda Aktar also was the daughter of a retired police inspector.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said they were increasing security for families of police officers.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the hacking death last month of a homeopathic doctor in Kushtia, the latest in a series of killings.

An 75-year-old Buddhist monk was found with his throat slit in a monastery in the Bandarban district of Bangladesh last month.

A Hindu tailor also was hacked to death in May in Tangail.

Four militant Islamists were arrested in the killing of a Rajshahi University professor in April.
