Mountain Biker Killed In Grizzly Bear Attack Near Glacier National Park

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, Montana, June 29, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 38-year-old mountain biker is dead after being attacked by a grizzly bear Wednesday outside Glacier National Park.

The victim has been identified as Brad Treat, a law enforcement officer for the U.S. Forest Service.

Investigators say Treat was mountain biking with another man Wednesday afternoon when they surprised the bear on a trail in the Halfmoon Lakes area, 3 miles outside the park.

The bear reportedly knocked Treat to the ground. The other mountain biker went looking for help.

When rescuers returned they found Treat dead with the bear nowhere to be seen.

Rangers closed camp grounds in the immediate area while trying to find the grizzly.

Six people have died in bear attacks in the Rocky Mountains in the last decade. The majority of the fatal attacks have taken place in the Yellowstone National Park area.

Since the establishment of Glacier National Park’s in 1910, there have been 10 fatal bear attacks.The most famous took place in 1967 when grizzly bears attacked and killed two people in different parts of the park on the same night.

The most recent fatal bear attack in Glacier prior to Wednesday was in 1998.
