RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil, July 16, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The New York Times is reporting anti-doping agencies from around the world are preparing to ask the International Olympic Committee to ban Russia from the 2016 Summer Olympics.
According to The Times, the anti-doping organizations will be joined by 20 other athlete groups, citing what they call a state-sponsored doping program.
The Times article, written by Rebecca R. Ruiz, claims an email has been circulated among the anti-doping groups, and that an official request banning the Russians could come as early as Monday, just three weeks prior to the opening ceremonies in Rio.
Russia’s track and field team has already been banned from the Summer Games due to widespread doping violations.
The Time article says juiced Russian athletes won a total of 15 medals during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
The Russian government in the past has denied doping allegations, saying they are part of a Western conspiracy to smear the former super power.
