NEW YORK CITY, June 30, 2017 (Gephardt Daily/UPI) — It was reported Friday afternoon that a gunman shot multiple people at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City.

A woman was killed and several people were injured in the shooting — which also resulted in the shooter’s death, police said.

Police said the shooter opened fire on the 16th and 17th floors of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital around 3 p.m.

At least three of the injured are in serious condition, CNN reported citing a law enforcement official. All told, at least six people were shot.

Just before 4 p.m., New York City Police Department spokesman J. Peter Donald said the suspect killed himself at the scene.

Authorities identified the gunman as Dr. Henry Bello, a former employee at the hospital. The rifle he used was an M-16 type weapon, which is the military version of the AR-15 assault rifle, the New York Daily News reported.

Bello, 35, who formerly practiced as a family physician at the hospital, wore a long lab-type coat during the attack, police said. It is believed he was able to hide the rifle under the coat.

None of the victims were immediately identified.

ABC4 in New York reported shortly after the incident that NYPD was responding with its “most-armed units” to an active shooter situation.

CNN cited the information from NYPD’s J. Peter Donald stating that the shooter died at the hospital. At the time, it was known only that the shooter was a former employee of the hospital. It came as a shock to many when it was learned that a doctor had gunned down several people in a “workplace shooting.”

The hospital was under lockdown as police came on scene. Officers helped evacuate the building one floor at a time.
